Plan it...Build it!

Where will you be living in the future?

We all have an idea of where we would like to live in the future and what sort of environment we would like to live in. For some that may be living in an apartment in the heart of a city, or others may enjoy living within a small community with open spaces near by.

To ensure that there are new homes available to suit everyone housing developers have to think carefully about where to build and who will buy their new homes. At the same time they have to take great care in preserving the existing environment around these developments and look at ways of enhancing the communities by constructing new roads and building new amenities within the local area.

Plan it...Build it! gives you the opportunity to take on the role of the housing developer Newco. (For the purposes of this project Newco are a fictional housing developer.) You will now be planning and developing a new housing development in the area of Newtown.

This is an exciting project that asks you to think about the type of houses that are needed in Newtown and how building these houses may affect the local environment and the people who live there.  How would you enhance the local area and environment and who would buy the houses that you build?

You will address these questions by working in teams, each team will represent a key department that would be found within a house building company. By using the information sheets provided you will put together a proposal for your ideal new homes development.

Click on Get Started to download all the information you need to work through this project.  There are two PowerPoint presentations available for teachers’ to download which will set the background to this project. These can be found within the teachers’ centre.

Good luck with the planning of your development.
